EU-ARTECH Symposium on Vincent van Gogh and Contemporaries
Amsterdam
May 14-15 2009
<URL:http://www.icn.nl/nl/actueel/agenda/eu-artech-14-15-mei-2009>

EU-ARTECH will have its last meeting in 2009 in Amsterdam.

In the frame of this closing meeting, EU-ARTECH will organize a
scientific symposium on research regarding paintings techniques and
conservation issues in the last quarter of the XIX century/first
quarter of the XX and particularly the work of Vincent van Gogh and
his contemporaries. The symposium will offer an opportunity to look
also into the important issues around the insertion of portable,
non-invasive instrumentation on art from this period.

The subjects would cover the study of the painting techniques, the
materials used (changes and current behaviour), characterization
techniques applied to these studies, relevant conservation related
conclusions (preventive conservation, cleaning, treatments, etc.)
and importance of this work in the context of his time (artistic
currents at the time, historic documentary sources). During the
symposium, special attention will be given to the Van Gogh atelier
practice research (the atelier practice of Vincent van Gogh in its
historic context), conducted the last years by the Vincent van Gogh
Museum, the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage and Shell.

Some very interesting results have already been achieved and we
expect more interesting information to come during the forthcoming
period; the project will finish with a special exhibition after
2010. The study has not limited itself to Van Gogh, but as the
project title says, it expands to contemporaries in relation to his
work and time. The symposium shall take place in Amsterdam on May
14-15 2009.

Given the interest on these matters showed by the conservation
community, the symposium will encompass two days of presentations
including a discussion of a work in progress.

Papers and posters

To this occasion we would like to solicit from you, particularly the
EU-ARTECH members, papers and contributions to the symposium. A
selection Committee will be formed made of EU-ARTECH members as well
as colleagues from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

In order to have consistency in the contents of the submitted
papers, we will use a modified version of the format used in
ICOM-CC, which is familiar to most of us.

Abstract submission guidelines

   1. Introduction (100 words)

       Title
       Author/s
       Address/es
       E-mail address/es

Introduce what you will discuss in your paper or poster.

   2. Main body of text (500 words)

Abstracts should contain enough detail to clearly convey the
approach and the results of the research. Divide the main
body of text according to section headings that will be used
in the paper or poster, for example Sampling, Methods of
Study, Experimental Results, etc. Experimental results of
work in progress may be indicated as Forthcoming information.

   3. Conclusion (150 words)

Send your paper and poster submission before March 10, 2009 to
