Questionnaire on Textile Use in Book Repairs

I am doing an MA in Book Conservation at West Dean College. My
research focuses on the dimensional stability and performance of
selected textiles in book joints. I will also be looking at board
reattachment techniques which rely on textiles, such as board
slotting.

I would be grateful if you could answer the following questions and
provide any relevant comments about your experiences using textiles
for reattaching boards.

Questionnaire:

    1. When using textiles to reattach boards do you use
Aerocotton, Aerolinen, other? (Please list your supplier).

    2. What weave orientation do you use? (i.e., warp parallel to
joint, warp perpendicular to joint, bias, don't know).

    3. If inserting short lengths of textile between sewing
supports do you alternate the weave orientation or leave all
        the same?

    4. Do you wash your textiles before use?

    5. What do you tint/dye/size your textiles with?

    6. Do you line your textiles with anything?

    7. Do you have any comments about the suitability of board
        slotting as a repair technique?

    8. Approximately what percentage of your board reattachment
repairs do you do by board slotting?

    9. What criteria do you apply when deciding whether to use
        board slotting?

Thank you very much for your time,
