Acre, a World Heritage Site, is a living laboratory for studying and
practicing conservation of historic sites and monuments. This
ancient city was once a major crossroad of Mediterranean
civilizations with a rich history of ancient Greek, Roan, Crusader,
Ottoman, and later periods. Acre has a deep heritage of oral
traditions, social practices, rituals and festive events, as well as
traditional crafts, art, and music. These have barely been accounted
for by city development programs.

This talk will focus on local and international projects of the newly
established International Conservation Center to enhance the knowledge of
Acre's inhabitants about their city; to safeguard the city's intangible
culture by collecting, researching and reviving local traditions; training
conservation professionals at sites in the city; and to serve as a resource
for all cultural and historic aspects of the city.
