International masterclasses 2009
Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN)

ICN <URL:http://www.icn.nl> will host two international
masterclasses on synthetic materials by Thea van Oosten, senior
conservation scientist at ICN. Her speciality is the research into
the conservation of synthetic materials applied on modern and
contemporary art.

Treatment and consolidation of modern materials Workshop
impregnating PUR flexible foams

Conservation treatments on plastic works of art are nowadays
still in an early stage. Experiments on coating and
consolidation of plastic artefacts were performed as laboratory
tests and can now be taught to conservators. In this workshop
objects will be treated using mechanical, aqueous and organic
solvent cleaning. After cleaning, consolidating treatments will
be practised on flexible PUR foams and polyester objects. Making
moulds and polyester and polyurethane rubber objects will be
    part of the practical work.

Teacher: Thea van Oosten, senior conservation scientist

Masterclass on plastics

Plastics are increasingly found in museum collections, for
example in ethnographical and textile collections. They were
used to imitate precious materials like ivory and amber.
Plastics are also to be found in modern art
collections, collections of household goods and in collections of
    scientific equipment.

There are guidelines for passive conservation only; active
conservation still has to be developed. The main subject of this
course is to acquaint you with the current state of knowledge
regarding identification, degradation and conservation of
plastics as used in cultural heritage.

Teacher: Thea van Oosten, senior conservation scientist.
Lectures by Agnes Brokerhof, senior conservation scientist at
ICN and Lydia Beerkens, conservator of modern art
