Conservator of Japanese Pictorial Art
The British Museum

UKP21245 per annum
Fixed-term for 6 Months

The British Museum has an outstanding collection of Japanese
pictorial art, including scrolls and screens on paper and silk and
Japanese prints. The Hirayama Studio is the leading studio dedicated
to the conservation of Asian painting in Europe and is part of the
Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at the Museum.
Work in the studio is based on a combination of traditional East
Asian techniques and best practice in general art on paper
conservation.

The Museum is looking for an enthusiastic paper conservator who can
develop their skills in the conservation and restoration of Japanese
pictorial art on paper and silk by working and training alongside
expert staff in the Hirayama studio. You will contribute to
conservation for the Museum's busy exhibition and loans programme
and you should be comfortable working to deadlines. You will also
have the opportunity to observe and assist during an ongoing
collaborative project with the Japanese Paintings Federation from
Japan to remount some of the Museum's most important and fragile
painted scrolls.

A good communicator and team player, you will have a recognised
professional qualification in the conservation of works of art on
paper and be able to demonstrate a strong interest in the
conservation of Japanese art on paper and silk; together with the
principles, concepts and techniques of East Asian painting
conservation.

Closing date: 21 May 2009
