Archaeological Field Conservator(s)
Kaman-Kalehoyuk excavation
Turkey

The Kaman-Kalehoyuk archaeological excavation in Central Turkey is
seeking one or more Field Conservator(s) for the months of June,
July, August, and September in 2010. This period may be shared by
more than one conservator due to the long season, the goal being to
have one Field Conservator in place at any one time. The excavation
is run by the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology that is
sponsored by the Middle Eastern Culture Center in Japan (MECCJ), a
research institute based in Tokyo. The Kaman-Kalehoyuk excavation
has been running annually since 1986. In 2009 excavation of two new
mound sites commenced, Yassihoyuk and Buklukale, located 20-30 km
from Kaman. In 2010 Yassihoyuk will be excavated in June and July,
Kalehoyuk in July and August, and Buklukale in August and September.
The primary cultural levels are Hittite, Phrygian, and Islamic.

The Field Conservator will manage an active conservation program
including the training of two conservation student interns (of
6-week duration), supervision of their laboratory research projects,
lifting and first aid operations in the field, processing and
treatment of artifacts, digital imaging, database documentation, and
artifact condition surveys. The conservation laboratory moved into
new facilities in 2009. A well-equipped field lab and very
comfortable living facilities compensate the long workday (starting
at 5 am). The Field Conservator has the opportunity to collaborate
with an international team of archaeologists, osteoarchaeologists,
archaeobotanists, etc. In 2010 the Field Conservator may be involved
in the relocation of objects from the old storage and from the
Kirsehir Museum to new storage facilities at Kaman. The new
Kalehoyuk Archaeological Museum, located in proximity to the
conservation laboratory, will open to the public in July 2010.

Applicants must be fluent in English, have a degree in conservation
or the equivalent, and a minimum of two seasons experience on an
archaeological excavation. Interested applicants should contact
Alice Boccia Paterakis. Information on salary and working conditions
will be provided. Please send your Curriculum vitae and a list of
three references by November 25, 2009, preferably as attachments to
email. A decision will be made in December 2009 at which time visa
applications are submitted.
