Asian lacquer conservation internship
Victoria and Albert Museum,

The V&A is seeking a conservation intern for a 3 month internship
(extendable by mutual agreement) during summer/early autumn 2012.
The internship will focus on the conservation of Asian lacquer
objects from the museum's permanent collections that are destined
for the forthcoming Furniture Gallery and the Europe 1600-1800
Gallery. The internship will be based in newly refurbished
conservation studios in Olympia, London and supervised by Shayne
Rivers, Senior Conservator.

The internship is intended for students currently enrolled in, or
recent graduates of, a conservation graduate program. The internship
is intended to provide a foundation in the conservation of East
Asian lacquer for a decorative surfaces generalist or an individual
looking to develop an Asian lacquer specialism. The internship
offers a unique opportunity to work alongside an experienced Asian
lacquer specialist, with hands-on experience on a variety of
objects. The intern will undertake directed reading and discussion
in support of the challenges presented by the objects they are
working on.

The ideal candidate would possess a specific interest in the
conservation of East Asian lacquer; an understanding of conservation
theory including cleaning, adhesives and consolidants; good hand
skills, with a delicate touch; familiarity with current approaches
and associated ethical issues.

The internship will be unpaid.

Prospective interns must be able to meet visa requirements to work
in the UK.

Expressions of interest should be sent to Shayne Rivers
