The Getty Conservation Institute's Education Department is seeking a
conservator for the position of Senior Project Specialist
(Collections) for a new initiative that will launch in the second
half of 2012.

Responsibilities: Working with other colleagues within the GCI, the
Senior Project Specialist will share responsibility for the
conceptual development of the new interdisciplinary initiative that
will focus on the research and development of sustainable
environmental control and management strategies for collections in
museums, libraries, archives, and other repositories. The initiative
will have several areas of complementary activity including
scientific research, field testing, education, and information
dissemination in an initial program of work that will span five

The Senior Project Specialist will be part of an interdisciplinary
team that will comprise the Head of the Education Department, the
Senior Scientist in charge of environmental research, and 2-3
additional scientists. The GCI team will coordinate its activities
with those of other researchers and practitioners working in this
area internationally. The Senior Project Specialist will therefore
be expected to cultivate external project partnerships and direct a
work program that will include a broad network of individuals and

As manager of the initiative, the Senior Project Specialist will
design, develop and implement field and education activities that
will draw upon scientific research being carried out by the GCI.
He/she will be responsible for guiding the initiative, assuring
integration and coordination of its various components, and
providing direction to project staff, external partners and
consultants. He/she may also teach, undertake research, publish, and
present project results at professional venues.

Qualifications:  The Senior Project Specialist must demonstrate a
broad knowledge of current research and practical issues related to
the control and management of collection environments. He/she should
hold a Masters degree or have equivalent graduate education in
conservation and have 7-10 years of combined practical and
management experience in conservation. Hands-on experience in
preventive conservation and managing collection environments is
essential. Strong project management background including the
design, initiation and implementation of project activities is also

The Senior Project Specialist must be adaptable, analytical, and a
creative problem-solver and thinker. He/she must be available for
frequent travel internationally, including for trips that may be
several weeks in duration. An ability to read, write and speak at
least one foreign language is preferred. International candidates
