Assistant Frame Conservator
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant Frame
Conservator to fill a term position ending June 30, 2013. The
position may be renewed annually on July 1st of each year.

Under the direction of the lab head:

    Undertake conservation and restoration treatments for the frame
    collection, document and survey condition, construction and
    finish techniques, and work on conservation research projects in
    the general field of frame and gilding conservation to develop
    new techniques and solutions to preservation problems.

Essential Functions:

    Determine need for conservation, and clean, conserve and treat
    objects.

    Perform technical and some scientific analysis as needed to help
    determine method of manufacture, material structure,
    deterioration, dating, authenticity and past conservation work,
    and to aid in the design of conservation treatments.

    Document conservation work in writing and through photography.

    Assist in preparing condition reports for potential and new
    acquisitions.

    Work on the Frame Survey project to fully document in writing
    and photography the nature and condition of all frames in the
    collection.

    Work with conservators, collections care staff, registrars, and
    curators on all aspects of transport, analysis, storage,
    installation and display of objects.

    Travel, courier and install exhibitions.

    Perform supervised research in the field of conservation and art
    history, and may be asked to contribute to reports and scholarly
    articles and work with or respond to inquiries from other
    departments, museums, consultants, scholars, vendors and the
    public.

    Keep abreast of developments in the conservation field via
    journals, abstracts and attendance at conferences.

Qualifications:

    Applicants should have a Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) with a
    specialization in furniture, wood, or gilding conservation from
    a recognized conservation training program.

    At least two years of post-training experience is required,
    preferably in frame conservation.

    Strong hand skills and excellent written, photo documentation,
    and communication skills are essential.
