The Getty Panel Painting Initiative (PPI) was launched in 2008 in
response to the concern that the handful of international
professionals with highly specialised skills in the conservation of
panel paintings was dwindling. Many such professionals have already
retired, or will do so within ten years. The PPI commissioned a
survey of collections with significant holdings of panel paintings,
along with the specific needs for training and opportunities for
addressing them. Following this survey a few "mid-career"
conservators with an interest in panel paintings conservation were
identified. Funding has since been provided for meetings and
residencies focusing on acquiring advanced skills within this area,
and now a second push has begun to provide specialist training for a
greater number of conservators, and to initiate a research agenda
into materials and techniques for the conservation and restoration
of panel paintings.

This talk relays the practical experiences from the first stage of
one of those residences, concentrating primarily on the structural
restoration techniques used at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure,
Florence in the treatment of one of the Florentine flood damaged
paintings from 1966, Georgio Vasari's Last Supper.
