Director of Paper Conservation
Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC)

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is seeking an
experienced conservation professional to lead its paper conservation
laboratory. The Director of Paper Conservation heads a staff of
professional paper conservators, confers with clients to develop
appropriate preservation and conservation treatment proposals, and
works closely with the Center's other department heads on
collaborative projects. He or she also provides consultation to the
public and performs collection surveys. In addition to
responsibility for the Department, the Director of Paper
Conservation participates as a member of NEDCC's senior management
team in hiring, strategic planning, policy development, and other
Center-wide initiatives. The Director reports to NEDCC's Executive


    Detailed knowledge of and at least ten years hands-on experience
    in paper conservation

    Solid educational and training foundation and credentials

    Significant experience managing conservators

    Strong verbal and written communication skills

    Excellent relationship-building skills

    Commitment to both the highest quality conservation treatment
    results and the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice
    while working productively

Description: The paper conservation laboratory is currently staffed
with seven paper conservators and contributes a significant amount
of revenue to NEDCC's operations with work from a broad spectrum of
cultural institutions and private clients. Conservation work
includes the treatment of printed and manuscript documents and works
of art on paper and parchment, photographs, maps, architectural
plans, posters, wallpaper, globes, and other three-dimensional
objects with paper components.

Founded in 1973, NEDCC is the first independent conservation
laboratory in the country to specialize exclusively in treating
paper-based collections.  NEDCC is incorporated as a nonprofit in
order to provide affordable services to cultural institutions. Its
mission is to improve the conservation efforts of museums,
libraries, archives, historical organizations, and other
repositories; to provide the highest quality services to
institutions that lack in-house conservation and reformatting
facilities or those that seek specialized expertise; and to provide
leadership in the preservation, conservation, and imaging fields.
Its services include book, paper, and photograph conservation;
digital reformatting; surveys and consultations; disaster
assistance; and workshops and conferences. NEDCC is located in a
renovated historic mill building in Andover, Mass., twenty-five
miles north of Boston.
