The CLAMTEC tool developed by the research department of the Haute
Ecole Arc de Conservation-restauration (HE-Arc CR) is a simple
instrument enabling inexpensive qualitative analysis of a metallic
alloy. The analytical technique is based on the automatic collection
of corrosion potentials for a duration of 5 to 15 minutes. For that
a drop of solution is placed between the pre-polished surface of the
metal and the measuring instrument. The electrochemical behaviour of
the metal is studied in three solutions of different pH and
conductivity and the plots obtained are compared with a database of
120 alloys of known composition and electrochemical behaviour. The
suggestions made by the software (from the most likely to the least
probable scenario) then need to be validated by the operator on the
basis of his technical knowledge of the materials under study.

The workshop will present the advantages of the CLAMTEC tool to more
expensive systems: ease of use, low cost, portability and almost
non-invasive character (for historic artefacts where the oxidation
is limited). Demonstration of measurements will be carried out as
well as exercises on test materials brought by the participants. The
future perspectives of the tool as well as the transfer of knowledge
between HE-Arc CR and end-users will be discussed.
