Fellowship at Swiss Institute for Art Research and Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)

From: Ester Ferreira <ester.ferreira<-at->
Date: Thursday, December 6, 2012
Postdoctoral Fellowship (80%)
Understanding Water Uptake, Gradient Formation and Material
    Transport in Canvas Paintings
The Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) and
Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)

Since paintings can be exposed to variable climatic conditions or
water based conservation treatments and since water can play an
important role in reactivity and material transport in paint layers,
it is important to know what happens when a complex multilayered
system such as a painting on canvas is exposed to moisture? Which
layers absorb water more promptly? How long is moisture stored and
where? We aim to characterise the internal structure of the
different layers and to better understand the interaction of water
with canvas paintings using Neutron radiography and laminography,
and X-Ray microtomography.

The Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) together with the
Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is offering an opportunity to join our
multidisciplinary team as a postdoctoral fellow. The position will
be based at SIK-ISEA under the supervision of Dr. Ester Ferreira, in
collaboration with Prof. Jaap Boon, Dr. Federica Marone (X-ray
microtomography TOMCAT beamline, PSI) and Dr. Anders Kaestner
(Neutron imaging ICON beamline, PSI).

The Fellowship has the duration of 2 years and the position offered
is part-time (80%).

Suitable candidates should hold a PhD in Material sciences,
Engineering or a closely related field. Experience in the
characterisation of materials using imaging techniques and knowledge
of image data processing is preferred. Interest in material
characterisation, art technology and conservation is welcomed. Good
knowledge of English is required.

Applications should be submitted by Friday, February 15, 2013 to
