PAPER CONSERVATORS

The March AIC Newsletter announces five openings for museum paper conservators, in Washington, DC, Honolulu, Cincinnati and Kansas City.

CONSERVATION PROGRAM OFFICER
Society of American Archivists

Under the direction of the SAA Executive Director, to develop, promote and coordinate conservation workshops, seminars and consultant programs designed to meet the needs of individual archivists and archival institutions for conservation training and program development. The position requires a familiarity with archival programs and issues, training and experience in archival conservation, strong interpersonal and program management skills. 24-month position in SAA's Chicago office with the possibility of extension.

PRESERVATION INTERN
New York Public Library, Conservation Division

The position, funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is temporary for twelve months (including four weeks paid vacation). It is available February 3, 1986.

Eligibility requirements: Graduation from an accredited library school. Supplemental training in preservation administration and/or expertise in executing conservation procedures and techniques, as demonstrated by previous relevant work experience or successful completion of a formal program in the conservation of research library materials. Familiarity with one or more foreign languages desirable. Familiarity with statistical analysis, sampling techniques, and systems analysis desirable. Work experience in a research library or an archives desirable. Applicants should have demonstrated leadership potential, initiative, promise and interest in the area of library administration, and the ability to work independently under general guidelines. Demonstrated communication skills required.

General description: Under the general direction of the Chief of the Conservation Division and working with other administrative staff within the Library, the Intern will undergo a period of general orientation in the administration of the collection management and preservation programs of the Research Libraries. Upon completion of the orientation period, which includes required readings, the Intern will help plan and carry out a specific preservation project or projects. Attends meetings as appropriate; participates in workshops and staff training programs as required. Upon completion of the 11-month training period, the Intern will submit a written report evaluating the training experience.

Salary: $22,630, paid on an hourly basis.

HEAD OF CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT
American Philosophical Library

independent research library with distinguished holdings in the history of science and American culture and a long-standing concern for preservation is seeking a Head Conservator for its program in the treatment of 5 million manuscripts, drawings, 200,000 printed books and photographs. Program focuses largely upon the manuscript collections, paper repair, deacidification, binding, exhibit preparation, and case making. The Head Conservator directs a department of three persons, is responsible for advising the Librarian on conservation priorities, and is involved with loans of the Society's library materials and collections to other institutions. Candidates should have advanced degree in conservation and library experience, or extensive professional experience. The position becomes available 1 July 1985. Applicants should contact:
