Editor's Page

No Ads, No Endorsements

Since this Newsletter does not print advertisements (except for Positions Open, where they are printed free of charge), all information about new products and services has to be part of a news or feature item if it is to be included at all. This means that the Editor has to describe the product or service, often using only what printed information has been furnished by the supplier. This description does not constitute an endorsement. Readers who want to know more about the quality of the product still have to use tried and true methods: ask for samples; ask the company to give a list of customers who use it, and call the customers; ask the Library of Congress Research and Testing Lab if they have any data on it; wait for more information to coma out in the Newsletter and elsewhere; try it out and test it in service; buy it on contract specifications or refer to national standards; and so on.

A misleading positive bias in reporting of supplies and services also results from the need to avoid libelous statements. Suppliers are understandably sensitive about anything that hurts their reputation or interferes with their livelihood. Readers should bear this in mind.

Wrong Page Numbers

There were two page 19s and two page 20s in the last two issues. The first p. 19-20 was a loose sheet with three "Positions Open" on it, at the end of the first issue. The second p. 19-20 is at the beginning of the second issue, and should be renumbered 19a and 20a to correspond with the references to then in the index.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued six or more times a year and has about 1050 subscribers. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise. All subscriptions expire on the last day of the year. To initiate or renew a subscription, send name, address, and a check for $35 (students $20), or the equivalent in £ Sterling to Abbey Newsletter, 320 E. Center, Provo, UT 84601 (801/373-1598).

No paid advertisements are accepted, but any notice that is appropriate and has news value will be printed if there is room for it. Written contributions and bits of news are welcome. Claims for issues never received, or received in damaged condition, will be honored within a year of publication.

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Abstracts, Institute of Paper Chemistry Abstract Bulletin and Graphic Arts Literature Abstracts (RET). It is not indexed in the usual periodical indexes because it is a newsletter. All issues but v.1 #2 are in print.

The Editor encourages readers to copy and pass around any article from the Newsletter, even entire issues; but before copying any part on a scale that amounts to republication, they must obtain permission from both author and Editor.
