Corrections

In the June issue (#4), on p. 75, there is a notice about the National Archives' new series, "Technical Information Papers (TIPs)." It turns out the telephone number for NTIS was wrong; it should be 703/487-4600. Also, NTIS won't send anything unless you give then the NTIS number for it, and those are unavailable. In any case, you can get all three documents from the National Archives. The first two can be obtained from: Director, Archival Research and Evaluation Staff (NSZ), National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC 20408; and the third one from Ken Harris, Director, Preservation Policy and Services Division (NNP), National Archives (etc.). Once again, they are:

TIP-0l: Digital Raster Scanning, Optical Character Recognition, Speech Pattern Recognition
TIP-02: MARC/Life Cycle Tracking of Archival Records
TIP-03: Specifications for Cold Storage of Color Film Materials

On the next page in the same issue, under "Standards & Practical Guides," the authorship of the article on "Poor Condition: Procedures for Identifying and Treating Materials before Adding to the Collections" is wrong. Marion T. Reid is not an author, but the editor of the column. The sole author is Marsha J. Hamilton.

A Note From The Editor

This Newsletter only comes out eight times a year, so if you skip a month it's not because we forgot to send it to you. And it is irregular too: the decision whether to call the current issue the August or the September issue, for instance, is not made until just before press time. The only way to keep track is to watch the issue numbers. Starting last year, with Vol. 11, the frequency became eight per year. Before that, 1980-86, it was six issues per year.

The rates for 1989 will be staying the same for the third year in a row: $35 per year. But the following year they may go up. We will send out reminders in October (or invoices for those that want them). In January, all subscriptions that have not been renewed are dropped, though they can be renewed at any time.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1050 subscribers. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise All subscriptions expire on the last of the year. To initiate or renew a subscription, send $35 (full-time students 20), or the equivalent in sterling to Abbey Publications 320 E. Center, Provo, UT 84601 (801/373-4598). Checks in U.S. dollars must bear the name of an American bank on their front.

No paid advertisements are accepted, except from advertising agencies placing job ads. Any notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Written contributions and bits of news are welcome. Claims for issues never received, or received in damaged condition, will be honored within a year of publication;

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts, the Institute of Paper Chemistry Abstract Bulletin and Graphic Arts Literature Abstracts (RIT) It is not indexed in the usual periodical indexes because it is a newsletter, but each volume has its own index, free to subscribers. All issues but v1 #2 are in print.

The Editor encourages readers to copy and pass around any article or issue of the Newsletter: but before copying part in more than 20 copies, they must obtain permission from the Editor. This is mainly to ensure that recent major revisions are incorporated before redissemination and that permission of authors (if any) is obtained.
