Events In The News
- Disaster preparedness workshops will be held in several
locations across New York State, in connection with the state
conservation program. Nonresidents may attend, with the
understanding that first preference is given to New York state
residents, and that the local hosts have final say. Dates are March
20, April 5, April 24, April 25 and June 9. For complete schedule

Environmental control, the other top priority of the New York
State program, will be the topic of a second series of workshops in
three locations in New York State, March 31, April 7 and April 10.
The workshops will be conducted by building technology consultant
William P. Lull. He will discuss the practical aspects of planning
for a new system or improving existing conditions in an old building
in light of political, fiscal and physical constraints. Registration
fee $5.00; preference given to New York state residents. Call Mrs.

- The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will have a workshop
on "Preservation and Exhibition of Books and Manuscripts" May 17-19,
with lectures, discussions, tours, and hands-on instruction. Contact

- The Northeast Document Conservation Center will conduct a
one-day seminar entitled "Preservation Considerations in the Design
of Library, Archives, and Record Management Facilities: The Storage
Environment," May 23, at the Connecticut Historical Society in
Hartford. Faculty will include Karen Motylewski, NEDCC's Director of
Field Service; Ernest A. Conrad, president of Landmark Facilities
Group Inc., an engineering firm specializing in environmental
controls for museums, libraries and historic structures; and Samuel
Streit, librarian with expertise in fund raising for building

- James Wayre, the English bookbinder who gave a week-long
workshop in Charleston in 1987 (AN, July 1988, p. 93),
might be available for workshops elsewhere in 1989. Jane McC. Brown
wrote in November, "Although the Charleston group might take
priority, especially for 1989, he told me he would be interested in
considering invitations in other places. To explore the
possibilities, groups should contact him directly at the following

- Greg Harrowing offers apologies for tardy replies to people who
have written him regarding the bookbinding masterclasses at
Soundwell July 24 to Aug. 25. He is better now, but was not well for
a while. He will reply to mail as soon as he can and send
registration, information forms or whatever has been requested.
- The 1989 Book and Paper Intensive will meet August 21-31 at
Ghost Ranch in Albuquerque, NM. This year the staff includes
Co-Directors Maria Fredericks and Timothy Barrett, bookbinders
Louise Genest-Cote and Robert Espinosa, type/ printer specialists
Susan Kind, Steve Miller and Clair Van Vliet, conservators Cathy
Baker and Robert Futernick, papermakers Amanda Degener and Don
Farnsworth, and lecturers Simon Green, Michael Gullick and Helen
