New E-mail Address for Abbey Publications

Our American Online address (Abbeypub@aol.com) will work for a while, but we have signed on to a local service, so our new address can be used too: Abbeypub@flash.net.

Note to Authors

Authors of articles and other contributions accepted by the Abbey Newsletter assign to Abbey Publications the right to publish their work in both print and electronic form and to archive it and make it permanently retrievable electronically. Authors retain copyright, however, and may republish their work in any way they wish.

Why Subscription Rates will Rise for '97

The Abbey Newsletter's subscription rate has risen twice since 1986, when it was $35 for individuals. However, it has still not kept up with inflation, which has been about 2.5% per year. This slow rise in rates has been one reason why we went in the red for a while last year. We are all right now, because we economized, and donations were a great help, but basically we have to be self-supporting, because we are not subsidized by an institution or organization, as most newsletters are.

We also need to have a "cushion" in our budget that will allow us to carry out projects, such as special publications, that do not pay off until later. And because the subscription base is small, each subscriber's payment is important. (The subscription base cannot easily be increased, because it targets a tiny audience, mostly professionals and decision-makers in preservation.)

For the past four years, the fee has been $40 a year for individuals. This will go up to $45. We will continue giving discounts for multi-year subscriptions.

Institutional rates, now $49, will go up to $55.

Here's what you get when you subscribe: Information that shows you how to make better decisions and purchases by providing a sound factual or expert basis for them; a detailed yearly index; a yearly list of useful addresses; de facto telephone and document delivery information service, on request; news from books and about 120 serial publications, some of which are far too expensive for most people to buy; information from overseas conferences; global coverage of news and trends; and in-depth coverage of paper industry trends affecting the supply of permanent paper.

To put this into perspective, the average library subscription has increased about 150% in price over the last ten years. ALA membership is $75/year (section membership, which brings a subscription to the section's journal, is $25-$35). SAA is $45 to $75, depending on the member's income. AIC membership is $100 + any special interest group dues.

Abbey Publications On-Line

The Abbey Newsletter and Alkaline Paper Advocate have joined much of the rest of the conservation community as a part of Conservation OnLine (CoOL), a web page sponsored by Stanford University and webmastered by Walter Henry.

Currently, the site contains part of volume 16 and all of volumes 17 and 18 of the Abbey Newsletter and volume 7 of the Alkaline Paper Advocate. Walter has included a search engine to aid in searching for information; ultimately, we hope to have most, if not all, of our back issues online. This is, however, an arduous process and will take some time. The site also has information about the Abbey pH Pen® and chlorophenol red, the chemical in the pen which changes color in the presence of acid.

To find us, point your browser to http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byorg/abbey/ or click on our logo to link directly from the CoOL home page (http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/).

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1250 subscribers. All subscriptions are for the calendar year. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise, until October 1; after that, it is assumed that the subscription is for the following year. Checks or international money orders may be made out in U.S. dollars, payable to Abbey Publications; send to 7105 Geneva Dr., Austin, TX 78723, USA. Foreign checks must have the name of a U.S. bank printed on the front. International payments can be made by VISA or Mastercard.

    Full-time students & unpaid interns $20
    Personal subscriptions: $40
    Institutional subscriptions: $49

Paid advertisements, except for job ads, are not accepted. Job advertisements are billed at the rate of $50 for the heading and the first ten lines (55-60 characters per line), plus $2 per line thereafter. Any notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Claims for issues never received will be honored within a year of publication. Defective issues will be gladly replaced on request.

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts, and the Institute of Paper Science & Technology Abstract Bulletin. All issues but v.1 #2 are in print, and each volume has its own index. It is the policy of Abbey Publications to use permanent paper for both newsletters.

The Editor encourages readers to photocopy freely from the Newsletter; but the Editor's permission must be obtained before making more than 20 copies of lengthy or signed articles. This allows us to make any necessary corrections or updates, and to contact other copyright holders for permission to reprint.
