The American Paper Institute's directory of films lists 102 films, mainly 16 mm, that are available from other sources (not the API). They cover careers, environment, forestry, how paper is made and used, and recovery boiler training aids. There are 10 on papermaking, if you don't count the ones on sawmill operation and manufacture of papermaker's felts. The distributors of nine film were asked by the Newsletter office for details of price and availability, so this could be announced. Results:

The trend toward lower temperatures and higher humidities for accelerated aging is reflected in ISO International Standards 5630/2 and 5630/3:

ISO 5630/2 is entitled "Paper and Board--Accelerated Ageing--Part 2: Moist Heat Treatment at 90°C and 25% Relative Humidity. First Edition--1985-11-15." It was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 6, Paper, Board and Pulps. 7 pp.

ISO 5630/3 is entitled "Paper and Board--Accelerated Ageing--Part 3: Moist Heat Treatment at 80°C and 65% Relative Humidity. First Edition--1986-12-15." Prepared by the same committee. 7 pp.

Both standards are supposed to be available through ANSI (1430 Broadway, New York, NY 10018, 212/354-3300).

"Permanence of Paper," by John C. William, Encyclopedia of Materials Science and Engineering, p. 3458-3461. 1986 ed. Text is organized under four headings: Factors affecting permanence, Accelerated aging tests, Methods of preservation and Specifications for permanent papers. The author is former head of the Research and Testing Office at the Library of Congress.

The Paper Conservator, Journal of the Institute of Paper Conservation, vol. 10,1986 just came out. Two of the 14 papers in it are:

"A Study of the Crystallinity of Paper before and after Conservation," by Vincent Daniels. P. 70-72. Treatment with two bleaching agents, one deacidification agent, morpholine and N-methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP) had no effect m the crystallinity of the test papers used (four old, one new), as measured by X-ray diffractograph.

"Watermark Research: Rembrandt Prints and the Development of a Watermark Archive," by Nancy E. Ash. Beta radiography is used to record watermarks on paper used by Rembrandt and other artists; detailed records are kept of the 300 watermarks gathered so far.

Falmouth Associates has completed its client study of high-filler papers (APA, Dec. 1988, p. 51) and the report has been mailed to program subscribers. Interest was high and participation was widespread, partly because of record prices for market pulp and titanium dioxide. Variables were: five retention systems' wood-free vs. mechanical furnish, acid vs. alkaline p[4 and filler type. Information about the study is available from Falmouth Associates, 170 U.S. Route One, Falmouth, ME 04105 (207/781-3632).
