Company News

The number of ISO 9000 registrations in the United States for companies manufacturing paper and allied products has grown to 134. This is 4.1% of the companies in the manufacturing sector, which leads other sectors of the economy in using the ISO standards for quality. Beckett Papers of Hamilton, Ohio, a division of International Paper, achieved registration in February 1994 under ISO 9002. (This is the mill that James Abbott says his grandfather took him to visit at the age of 10--see "Profile: James C. Abbott" in the May Tappi Journal.)

In March, Georgia-Pacific Corp. shut down the last of the Hopper Paper Co. mills it bought in 1963, the 110-tpd mill in Taylorville. It had been making premium grades for annual reports and brochures, all acid.

Conservatree Paper Company of San Francisco will not be distributing paper any more from their own warehouse, though they may sell direct from mills. Company president Alan Davis was quoted in the February Recycled Paper News that it will now focus on information publishing.

Avenor Inc. is the new name of Canadian Pacific Forest Products Ltd.

Specialty Minerals, a subsidiary of Minerals Technologies Inc., began operation in May of its 35th and 36th PCC satellite plants to serve Georgia-Pacific's Ashdown and Port Hudson mills. The PCC plant serving Ashdown is the largest ever built by Specialty Minerals.
