Scheduled Presentations at the ISR Workshop on the Effects of Aging On Printing and Writing Papers

This is the same workshop referred to in the last issue as the "ISR Permanence Workshop," to be held in Philadelphia July 6-8. (ISR is the Institute for Standards Research, a part of ASTM.) All of the papers will be given on the first day. The other two days will be given over to discussion and planning a giant coordinated research program that will address the feasibility of permanence standards based on performance rather than on the materials (e.g., lignin) of which paper is made. In other words, the participants will be expected to work. It will be a real workshop, an international one at that.

Terry Norris Overview of Paper Deterioration
Paul N. Banks Paper Permanence: Present Needs and Future Opportunities
Paul Whitmore The Mechanisms of Chemical Deterioration of Paper
Derek Page The Mechanisms of Physical Deterioration of Paper
Rajai Atalla The Mechanisms of Optical Deterioration of Paper
Derek J. Priest Artificial Aging of Paper: Correlation with Natural Aging
Cyril Heitner The Chemistry and Physics of Lignin as they Relate to Paper Permanence
Gordon J. Leary The Optical Properties of Lignin Containing Papers as they Relate to Paper Permanence
Bruce Lyne The Effect of Composition on the Permanence of Paper
Chandru Shahani Accelerated Aging of Paper: Can it Really Foretell the Permanence of Paper?
Norayr Gurnagul Canadian Cooperative Permanent Paper Research Program: Development Process: Physical Testing Aspects
Helen Burgess Canadian Cooperative Permanent Paper Research Program: Development Process: Chemical Testing Aspects
John Havermans The European Community Science & Technology for Environmental Protection (STEP) Program
Tom Lindström The Swedish R&D Project on Paper Preservation

The registration fee for the first day is $225; for all three days it is $245. For more information on registration call Cecilia Tokarski at 215/299-5436. Information about obtaining the proceedings, for people who were unable to attend, is available from Accounting Control, ASTM, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.
