Photographic Materials Specialty Group Website

The Photographic Materials Group (PMG) consists of about 300 members who are interested in photographic preservation, conservation treatment, history and technology. The various backgrounds and interests of PMG members mirrors the diversity of materials found in photographic media: plastic film, glass, metal, and composite objects including wood, paper prints, and album/book structures.

PMG holds a half- or full-day session at each AIC annual meeting. Sessions include a range of talks covering preservation, collections, treatment, informal tips, updates on research, disaster recovery, and the history and technology of photography. In addition, PMG sponsors a biannual, two day winter meeting that usually includes a one day pre- or post-conference session featuring workshops or lectures. PMG publishes the biannual Topics in Photographic Preservation, an unjuried compilation of papers submitted by members. The first chapter of the Photographic Materials Conservation Catalog is now available.

Although PMG has no formal liaison relationship with other organizations, individual members are active participants in standard setting committees such as the American National Standards Institute Photographic Standards and other professional organizations such as the Society of American Archivists. Fees to join: $25; $10 (students).
