kettle stitch

The stitch made near the head and tail of a book sewn on tapes or cords, and which holds the sections (other than the first and last) together. The term may be a corruption of "catch-up stitch," or "Kettel stitch" (the stitch that forms a little chain). Sometimes called "ketch stitch." (106 , 56 , 236 )
