paste-grained roan

A tanned grain split of a sheepskin, split while in the limed state. When in the finishing stage, a flour paste is applied to the flesh side, which causes the skin to plump, enabling it to take a bright cross or straight grain. The flesh split is either tanned or converted into parchment. Paste-grained roan is sometimes referred to as "French morocco. " (335 )
