phenol ( carbolic acid )

A soluble, crystalline compound (C 6 H 6O ), that is acidic, forms metallic salts, and is readily halogenated, sulfonated, and nitrated. It is used in the manufacture of phenolic and epoxy resins, various dyes, and the like. Phenol, even in its purest form (ice crystals), has a tendency to turn a pinkish color. It is also used at times as a preservative in paste. In concentrated forms it must be carefully handled, as it can cause severe burns. (198 )
