A small tablet of metal having a design in relief and cast from a wax mold. The principle was adopted in France during the 15th and 16th centuries as a center decoration for book covers. Hand-painted specimens are to be found on books hound for Jean Grolier, the plaquette being impressed in gesso, painted, and then fitted into the upper board. S(e also: CAMEO BINDINGS . (347 )
