printing processes

The various processes by which printing jobs are done. There are, in general, four fundamental printing processes: letterpress (relief printing); intaglio (gravure printing); planography (flat-surface printing); and silk screen. Letterpress includes printing from raised type, halftone, or woodcuts on a platen, cylinder, or rotary press printing. Intaglio includes printing from engraved plates, etching, photogravure, or rotogravure. Planographic printing includes lithography, offset, aquatone, collotype, etc., printing. Silk-screen printing utilizes a stencil (silk or other material) through which ink or paint, e.g., is forced. (17 )
