Karibari—the Japanese make houses and conservators dry and flatten paper with it. How that is done, what to pay attention to and what absolutely not to do is what this workshop will be teaching. Drying and flattening on the Karibari has many advantages, but cannot always be applied. However, one should not give up too early. With some easy but important preparations will make it possible to even dry sheets with tears, unusual formats and unusual combinations of material (i.e. oil on paper) under tension. The technique is non-contact,which can be extremely important on pressure sensitive surfaces, it can be more successful than other methods and it doesn’t have to be expensive. First participants will work on mock-ups do learn the limits of this technique without the fear of damaging an original. Also, one needs to get a feeling for the different papers and their expansion and contraction and after that who would like to can work on originals.
