New materials and forms of presentation are constantly being introduced into the area of contemporary photography. They are a sign of the creativity of the artists, but also of the persistently developing technical possibilities. Some finishing processes, for example the mounting of photographs to acrylic and aluminum-polyethylene-composites, or, usually associated with this, laminating, have by now become internationally established. The questions of preservation and treatment of these works, however, have still not been answered to our satisfaction. Therefore, it is first necessary to acquire a detailed understanding of the used materials and manufacturing processes, in order to then develop methods of their conservation. In this sense, the course cannot offer perfected treatment solutions, but instead, it will try to convey a consciousness for the manifold conservation problems associated with contemporary photography. The topics are first discussed theoretically, then practical restoration exercises on examples will follow. Participants—they have to bring along their own tools—should be conservators or other specialists with equivalent knowledge.
