This course will provide an in-depth analysis of current theory and practice of preventive conservation. It will look in detail at the basis upon which we make decisions for caring for a wide range of documentary material including modern media. Emphasis will be given to practical sessions highlighted by recent case studies relating to effective and sustainable solutions and how effectively the requirements of collections can be communicated to different interest groups. The course will also focus on recent threats to collections such as climate change and will look at the interpretation of different building structures. The course aims to equip participants with different models of preventive conservation that will enable them to be able to care more economically and effectively for collections and where applicable make appropriate interventive conservation decisions. The course will be a mixture of lectures and practical sessions. It is suitable for conservators, bookbinders, and those participants involved in collection and preservation management with equivalent knowledge.
