International Committee for Museums of Arms and Military History Comité international des musées d'armes et d'histoire militaire

The purpose of ICOMAM is to foster the study of arms, armour, artillery, fortifications, uniforms, flags and medals and to develop and maintain relations between museums and other institutions concerned with the preservation and interpretation of such artefacts. It is the only international organisation of its kind dealing comprehensively with this particular subject area in the field of museology. ICOMAM holds triennial congresses and annual symposia or conferences and organises the triennial Justus Lipsius Award for outstanding published research in the field. ICOMAM’s approach to the study and conservation of artefacts is historical, scientific and objective but always within a social context. It seeks to explore both the technical development of the material culture of its subject area and the often profound impact this has had on national and international politics and economics, society and art. The committee hopes to demonstrate the extent to which arms and military history are part of all our cultural heritage.

L’ICOMAM a pour mission d’encourager l’étude des armes, de l’armurerie, de l’artillerie, des fortifications, des uniformes et des drapeaux et des médailles, et de développer les relations entre les musées et les institutions chargées de la conservation et de l’interprétation de ces objets. Cette organisation internationale est à la seule à étudier de façon approfondie ce sujet d’un point de vue muséologique. L’ICOMAM organise des congrès triennaux et des symposiums ou conférences annuels et décerne tous les trois ans le Justus Lipsius Award triennal, qui récompense les meilleurs travaux publiés dans le domaine. L’approche de l’ICOMAM en ce qui concerne l’étude et la conservation des objets est historique, scientifique et objective, mais s’inscrit toujours dans un contexte sociologique. Le comité vise à explorer aussi bien l’évolution technique de la culture matérielle de son sujet d’étude que l’impact profond qu’il a exercé sur la politique, l’économie, la société et l’art à l’échelle nationale et internationale. Le comité entend montrer dans quelle mesure les armes et l’histoire militaire font partie de notre patrimoine culturel.
