7. The State Museum-Preserve "Pavlovsk"
   Pavlosk, the former summer residence of Emperor Paul I, is one of Russia's most treasured museums. The site contains detailed information about both the house and the park, which is one of the largest landscaped parks in Europe. There is a plan of the palace with pictures and a description of each room, and a page devoted to the palaces Museum of Nineteenth Century Russian Interiors. The palace was occupied by the Germans during World War II and was burnt down as they left - restoration of the palace and park took almost 50 years and there are before and after pictures available on the site.

     The collecting of art treasures in Russia can be traced back to the reign of Peter the Great (1682 - 1725). He was the first to propose the establishment of museums in Russia and himself took steps towards the realization of his idea. Even in the seventeenth century, though, it would have been possible to see many items of West European applied art in use at reach court of the Muscovite tsars and in the homes of boyars, but in the main these objects had a purely functional purpose. The gifts made by foreign embassies - chiefly the works of gold and silversmiths - were kept in tsar's treasury and brought out only on particularly festive occasions. The Great Treasury, as it was known, formed part of the Armoury Chamber witch like the monastery and church sacristies was one of earliest assemblages of works of art predating any concept of systematic collecting. A significant portion of these itens survived down to the present day and came to form the basis of Armoury - the earliest museum of art and history in Russia.
