Library of Congress Subject Headings: Preservation Descriptors, "Free-Floating" Subdivisions

Erich Kesse
The following is a list of subdivisions commonly used with
Library of Congress Subject Headings for preservation. Though
often used with subject headings, they do not appear in every
instance where they might be used in the list of preservation
descriptors.

Archive applications
   "Archive applications" is used as a subdivision under specific
    subjects; e.g., "Photostat -- Archive applications".

Bibliography
   "Bibliography" is used as a subdivision under specific
    subjects; e.g., "Bookbinding -- Bibliography".

Catalogs
   "Catalogs" is used as a subdivision under specific subjects;
    e.g., "Artists' materials -- Catalogs". The term is
    typically used under types of library materials, microforms,
    objects, products and publications.
    NOTE: "Microform catalogs" is used to describe catalogs of
    micropublications except when the name of a microform is part
    of the subject heading; e.g., "Books on microform --
    Catalogs".

Conservation and restoration
   "Conservation and restoration" is used as a subdivision under
    specific subjects; e.g., "Books -- Conservation and
    restoration". This term seems to be used under
    non-perishable materials. The following is a partial list of
    subject headings which were subdivided by this term:
    ============================================================
        Art
        Books
        Charters
        Court records
        Legal documents
    ============================================================
    NOTE: The subdivisions "Preservation" and "Preservation and
    storage" are used to express similar concepts.
    NOTE: Cataloging agencies do not always apply these similar
    terms consistently. Often, different agencies will have used
    different subdivisions to describe the same subject.

Dictionaries
   "Dictionaries" is used as a subdivision under specific
    subjects; e.g., "Bookbinding -- Dictionaries".
    NOTE: Dictionaries which are either incomplete lists or
    comprehensive but not alphabetically listed are subdivided
    using "Terminology". Dictionaries which distinguish names
    are subdivided using "Nomenclature".

Handbooks, manuals, etc.
   "Handbooks, manuals, etc." is used as a subdivision under
    specific subjects; e.g., "Bookbinding -- Handbooks, manuals,
    etc." The term typically describes operations, actions and
    procedures. The following is a list of subject headings
    which were subdivided by this term:
    ============================================================
        Bookbinding
        Bookbinding -- Repairing
        Books -- Conservation and restoration
