President's Letter

by Glenn Wharton

Plans for our upcoming meeting in Seattle have now been made final. This year, to accommodate the discounted airfares for Saturday stay-overs and to encourage members to stay through the last day, the conference will begin on Sunday, September 29.

We have an excellent program with presentations about treatments, analysis, philosophy, mounts, history--and more. A panel on Monday morning, "Cultural History Collection Care: Challenges to the Established Order," will discuss the ways in which the work of conservators is affected by new policies and new laws that give Native Americans a voice in determining the care, handling and disposition of some museum collections.

Special conference activities include receptions at the Seattle Art Museum and also at the Burke Museum. Those arriving on Saturday may be able to join a tour of outdoor sculpture in downtown Seattle (contact Patricia Tuttle-Leavengood for details). Our Sunday night banquet will be aboard the Virginia V, a historic steamboat. The Edgewater, where the conference will be held, is the city's only waterfront hotel.

I am looking forward to another great meeting, and to seeing you all in Seattle!
