SOS! California Has Been Established

by Glenn Wharton

SOS! California is currently gathering lists of all non-museum, publicly accessible sculpture in the state. If any conservators have worked on little-known sculptures, or have access to inventory lists, please send them directly to the SOS! regional coordinators. If you have any questions, you may contact to Wharton & Griswold Associates.

SOS! California has recently been formed as part of the SOS! (Save Outdoor Sculpture!) effort to survey all publicly accessible outdoor sculpture in the country. The project is sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Art and the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property. Over the next three years, volunteers will be trained to identify sculpture fabrication methods and signs of deterioration. They will perform background research as well as on-site examination. Data from the survey will be added to the computerized inventory of American sculpture at the National Museum of American Art.

SOS! California will cover all parts of California except San Francisco and San Diego, where local SOS! projects are already underway.
