1. The process of soaking or exposing a substance, such as flax or hemp, so as to promote the loosening of the fiber from the woody tissue by bacterial action. The term also refers to chemical treatment to loosen fiber from the woody tissue. 2. The rotting or damage to a material caused by exposure to moisture.
