snuffing

The process of lightly BUFFING (2) the grain surface of a leather, usually by means of carborundum paper wrapped around a revolving cylinder. Snuffing is a degree of sandpapering between buffering andCORRECTED GRAIN , and the leather treated is said to be "snuffed." (363 )
