sprinkling
The process of sprinkling or spattering
irregularly shaped spots or splotches of coloring
matter on the leather covers of a book, usually
calfskin or sheepskin, or on the edges, to achieve
a decorative effect. Traditionally, sprinkling was
done by means of a large brush knocked against an
iron bar, but it is now usually done with a brush
and sieve, or by means of a mechanical device.
