Whatman, James ( 1741-1798 )

An 18th century English papermaker. His father. James Whatman (1702-1759), acquired a part ownership in the Turkey Mill papermaking establishment near Maidstone in 1740 and developed it until it became one of England's leading papermaking firms. The Whatmans are credited with the first manufacture of WOVE PAPER in Europe, in about 1755, and they may also have invented the wove-wire mold (about 1756). Whatman paper is still being made, and is used for special editions and privately printed books. (140 )
