New academic programme
Technical Conservation Studies Masters

This nominally one-year, trimester based, postgraduate diploma in
Technical Conservation Studies, is scheduled to launch on 1 February
2017. The programme emphasizes bench skills and will offer
preparation for commercial enterprise and/or employment in
conservation to students from various undergraduate fields of study.
The programme follows the candidate's bachelor's degree and
successful award allows progression to a master's degree.

Nomenclature: This is a 130-credit programme, equivalent to a
"graduate diploma", as awarded in the UK, Canada, New Zealand and
Singapore, or a "higher diploma", as awarded in the Republic of
Ireland.

This full-time, resident programme is conducted in English and will
be conducted at the campus of The South African Institute for
Heritage Science and Conservation, Twee Riviere, Southern Cape
region, South Africa. The programme has been designed to equip
students with a broad knowledge of conservation theory and practice
and to impart hands-on, preparatory skills in four conservation
specialisms, namely metals conservation, paper conservation,
ceramics conservation and stone and mortar conservation. Students
will also have opportunity to undertake advanced level conservation
work within the built environment, as well as in either paper
conservation *or* metals conservation--depending on the student's
preference. A research project (35 credits) concludes the
programme.

Pound Sterling 8,900 (or UKP 10,250 including accommodation)
Euro 10,550 (or Euro 12,250 including accommodation)

Part-bursaries in the value of USD 1,250, or UKP 975, or Euro 1,150
are available to all students residing on campus.

This postgraduate programme, with its rare emphasis on technical
skills, sets a novel direction: Accordingly, formal enrollment shall
pend until mid-September, 2016 permitting the programme's
accreditation to be concluded by the Council on Higher Education.
In the interim, interested persons are invited to view the
programme's entry prerequisites at

Opportunity exists for prospective students to provisionally
participate in an interview and/or aptitude test. International

assisted in the interim by way of correspondence and/or Skype
interviews.
